
On October 9, 1992 at approximately 7:50 pm EDT the 4.4-billion-year-old, 26-pound meteorite smashed through a red Chevy Malibu parked on a residential driveway in Peekskill, New York, which started a legendary journey.

The impact of a twelve and a half kilo H6 chondrite into the back of Ms. Michelle Knapp’s parked car on the evening of October 9, 1992 is the best known meteoritic event of modern times. Everyone has heard of the “car that was hit by a meteorite.”R.A. Langheinrich Meteorites owned the world-famous car, and this vehicle has seen the world too. The battered red Malibu coupe has been featured in museums and exhibitions in New York City, Tucson, Arizona, Paris, Switzerland, Germany, and Tokyo!
It has brought wonder and amazement to the thousands of people who have flocked to see the car who’s trunk was caved in by a visitor from outer space.
