A brief History of Langs Quarry and eurypterid collecting in the Bertie Group

Since the late 1800s, the upper Silurian dolostones of upstate New York, referred to as the Bertie Group, have yielded an exceptional eurypterid fauna. Becoming the premier unit for Eurypterid remains.

In 1978, on a Field trip lead by Samuel Ciurca, Allan Lang would visit what is now Lang's Quarry.

After purchasing the property in the early 80s, Allan would excavate massive amounts of the Phelps waterlime (the eurypterid beds). The result of this hard work and dedication is the world's premier eurypterid locality.

Among the thousands of complete Eurypterus remipes found at the Langs quarry, four large Pterygotus composites have been built from articulated sections of individuals, over 30 true scropions have been found, as well as the most articulated examples of the 2 most rare Bertie eurypterids, Clarkipterus and Buffalopterus
